Keys to Success in Business by Alan Melton

Practical Keys

  • Identify a higher purpose for your company. Develop a long-term vision for your business that transcends merely earning profits. Include in your vision something to make your community a better place to live. Good employees and customers flock to a business that has a higher purpose and values.

  • Work on your vision every week. Spend uninterrupted time with your team working on your business. Work to remove the obstacles to achieving your vision. When you encounter a problem that isn't easily solved, put the problem on a flip chart, and brainstorm for solutions. If you keep focused on possible solutions, you will eventually eliminate or reduce the problem.

  • Develop yourself and your team. Your business will only grow to the degree that you grow. Read books and articles, listen to audiotapes, go to seminars, and watch videotapes and DVDs on business topics. Use your commute time to develop yourself through tapes and CD's. Get involved in your industry; attend trade shows, run for your industry association board. Never stop learning and growing!

  • Set goals and measure progress for everything that's important. Is your customer satisfaction important? If so, you better measure it! Find a way to measure all of your critical success factors. Once you establish a base line for a measure (your present performance level), set a higher goal, and work toward it.

  • Communicate- Communicate- Communicate! Share your vision with your employees beginning with their first day at work, and keep telling them in different ways: in writing, in speech, and in action. Help them to know what you know, and they will act like owners of your business themselves. Share your vision with all of your stakeholders; customers, shareholders, vendors, creditors. The power of a shared vision will propel you to success.

  • Exceed the needs of your customer. Find out what your customer wants and find a way to give the customer a little more than what they want. Do this consistently and you will never have a shortage of customers!

"You can get anything you want out of life by helping enough other people get what they want." - Zig Ziglar

Spiritual Keys to Happiness

  • Develop a daily quiet time. Spend the first part of your day asking God for direction, insight, inspiration, and vision. Utilize this time by praying and reading the Holy Bible. Use the ACTS acrostic in praying for your business:
Adoration
Praising God for who He is.
Confession Confessing sins of thought, word, commission, and omission
Thanksgiving Thanking God for what He has done
Supplication Asking God to help us with our specific needs and the needs of others

After you have done the above, do whatever God places on your heart and mind. Obey His leadership, no matter how unusual it may seem. Study the heroes of the bible to see God using unusual acts to bring about His supernatural events.

"All of our fretting and worrying is caused by planning without God."
- Oswald Chambers
